My name is Sarah Berrisford. I am based in the small village of Gedney Hill in Lincolnshire, located centrally between Peterborough, Spalding and Wisbech.
I started riding horses at the age of 2, at the young age of 9 I acquired my first pony, Whisper, who was bought from a horse sale. I owe a lot to this pony, due to her distrust of humans she taught me how to move around horses, communicate and most importantly she taught me patience and how to use and portray my energy.
Over the next few years I was fortunate enough to meet an array of different horses and handlers with their separate issues. I learnt a lot of what not to do by watching these horses and handlers and so came the realization that the communication which I had with Whisper was actually a universal equine communication: Body language.
Upon leaving secondary school I decided to take the British Horse Society Examinations up to BHS Stage 3, plus many other equine related qualifications, all of which I passed first time and by the age of 18. At the same time I was working in our family run Riding School and Training/ Breaking yard, and later developed our Stud. Over the years I have trained and broken in many horses, a lot of these have had serious issues and their owners could no longer handle let alone ride them, and yes in these cases where a horse has become violent and un accepting towards humans, it is dangerous, but the end result of bringing a horse back to being a ‘horse’ again is one of the most fulfilling moments that one can feel.
My journey with Reiki began when my horse seriously injured himself in the field. The vet held very little hope that he would ever be able to be ridden again and the best case scenario was for him to just be a companion. I was completely devastated, until a ray of hope popped out of a magazine. This ray of hope being an advertisement for Equine Reiki. I had never heard of Reiki before, but was drawn to the energy healing properties displayed in the article.
I decided to book a course of Reiki sessions for Pancho and to cut a long story short he made a remarkable recovery and is able to be ridden in all disciplines.
After this first encounter of Reiki I found that Reiki seemed to appear everywhere, from articles in magazines to persons mentioning it for no particular reason. Finally I went for my yearly tarot reading with a good friend of mine who is also a clairvoyant and surprise, Reiki came through in my reading. Well actually a more decisive “using Reiki on horses” came through. I decided perhaps now was the time to explore Reiki and see where it led me.
On completing Reiki 1 with Louise Heseltine through Reiki Evolution, I began treating friends, family and of course my horses. I found that horses had such beautiful energy that all of my spare time was spent giving Reiki to them. Straight away I noticed a difference in the horses, from the older horses with perhaps a bit of stiffness becoming instantly more supple, to the youngsters who weren’t used to being stabled becoming completely settled and happy to be stabled.
Reiki 2 bought more wonder into my experiences of using Reiki with horses. I began to experiment with horse and rider, for example, seeing a stressed and nervous horse and rider at a show, I drew the SHK symbol over them and flooded energy down onto them. Within minutes a happy and calm horse and rider were riding in front of me. I smiled and realised even more how happy and contented Reiki made me feel and so I went back to Louise Heseltine to complete the Reiki Master/Teacher course. Again the increase in the power of the energy was remarkable.
Now I have integrated Reiki into my Equine Training programs and the results speak for themselves. Using a combination of Reiki and Intuitive Horsemanship, horses change their current state of mind instantly and as for using Reiki’s physical healing attributes, the horse seems to use the energy very effectively.
Although Reiki has given me and the people and animals I practice with so much already, I feel that my journey with Reiki is just beginning…
